Introduction to Photography
Exercise 6: Studio Lighting.

Lecture: We all when straight to the photo studio then got started showed the pictures we printed at Photomedia then started to learn how to use the large flashlights.

Pictures from the Studio.

We spend almost an hour just to get the right exposure and the type of lighting we wanted. The goal as to create a rim light around our faces. It took alot of changes to the light settings and angles to create the rim light. Eventually we manage to get it.

The flashlight was set up behind the model at an angle and the power was at 7.2 so that the exposure could be set up at f/16 on the camera. We use the light mater to get an accurate reading. It took many try and error to get it correct. When we got the lighting right all the following pictures were shot at ISO:200, f/16, 1/125

_______________________________________________________________________

I came up with a series 5 pictures and i posted on fb to see what Mr Vinod had to say about it. After getting his feedback i did some changes and came up with a new series. I decided to do a series of 6 because i felt that it looked nicer with 6 pictures instead of just 5 photos.

My earlier Final 5 pictures.

Final Photos for Theme-Based Project

Rationale.

“Own The Court”

About the photographer:
Amer Eizwann Haziran (b. October 1996) studying in Foundation in Design at Taylors University Lakeside Campus, Subang. Ever since I was form 2,  I was dragged to join the photography club in school by one of my friend.  From there I actually got hook on to photography and started to like taking photographs of things around me.  I stayed in the club throughout my high school years and ended up being the president of the club when I was form 5. I choose Photography as my elective because I wanted to continue learning about the world of photography in depth.  After 15 weeks of learning I’ve gain more knowledge about photography then I’ve learn in 5 years of my high school life.

About the photographs:
All of with photos were taken at Bangsar Sports Center Futsal court. My choices for the final themes were either Sports, Food, Fashion photography but after a week of thinking it out I decided to go with sports as my theme. Sports in general are very broad, so I came down to one sport that was Futsal as my final theme based project.  I choose Futsal because to me it would be easier because I knew the game. So I can tell what is going to happen next most of the time. For me when it comes to shooting sports it’s all about the moment. My challenge is to put an artistic angle to a good moment to produce a good shot for my final 5 photos.

The first photo was taken at a low angle and the reason behind that is because I wanted to make it look like he was fully diving towards the ball. The scary part is I purposely ask another friend of mine to kick the ball as close to me as possible so that I could capture the moment as if he was about to catch the ball. In the second photo I wanted to tell the story of teamwork. A futsal team consists of many players so this wide shot shows few people in their position as a team finding their way to victory. The third picture was taken on a really rainy day so the water started to cover up the pitch. So I took that as an advantage by taking this shot. Playing in the rain and making moves like that is a dream for most futsal or football player. Message behind the forth picture is I wanted the viewer to feel the experience of playing in the rain. The picture shows how when Arieff flipped his hair in the rain makes you realize that every player has to focus and get your head in the game.  The fifth photograph was taken to show how its not all about the players on the pitch but the people around also plays an important part of the game. I took at a very low angle because I wanted to enhance the highlight on the floor and also it creates a nice rhythm on the subject because they were siting a line and all of them were looking at the same place. The last photo is about the weapon for futsal. The shoe is an important asset to a player. I was inspired by a photograph I saw in nike’s advertisement and decide to take a similar shot because I felt that it had the artistic composition.

As for the technical part, most of the pictures were taken with a high ISO (ex. 3200, 4000, 5000) because I didn’t want the lack of light be an issue. As for the aperture, majority was between f/4 and f/8 so that I would have a clear shot and also so that I wouldn’t have such a shallow depth of field. As for the shutter speed, most of the time was above 1/400 because I wanted to get a fast movement photo without having the blur movement effect on the picture. To conclude this, I had a good time producing my final photographs and I’ve learn so many new things along the way. It totally gave me a new perspective of sports photography.

Experience:

This week i experience using another set of lighting (flashlight) in the studio. It was a big challenge getting the light the way that we wanted. it took nearly an hour but we manage to achieve the rim light we wanted. Using the flashlight and power bag was a great experience for me cuz i always wanted to use it. so to get to learn the right way of using it was really fun. I had a really hard time picking my final 5. I spend hours sitting down looking at my laptop choosing the perfect series but i felt that looking at the screen is going to be different when its actually printed out. So i went to print all my possible final pictures and arrange them to see which 5 works together. I ended up picking 6 picture for my final theme based project.

Observation:

This week i observe that my knowledge on lighting has gain even more since last week because this week ive learn to use another source of light. I observe that the power bag can give a really specific amount of power you want and the light meter give you really accurate reading on the power of the light that is flashing. I also observe that different model has different effects on their face even though the light set up is the same, due to the different facial structure of each and everyone give a variety of shadow drops and etc on the subject. Another than that i also  observe that to create a series does not mean putting together your top photos but to put pictures that has a similar subject to it and tells a story behind all the pictures chosen.

Findings:

I find out this week that the flashlight gives a different effect compared to the previous lighting that we used. (Spotlight & Main light.) The flashlight gives more soft light on the subject and theres no strong shadows dropping on the model. the flashlight also create a better and nicer rim light compared to the spotlight.

Introduction to Photography
Studio Lighting.

Lecture: No lecture this week. We all when straight to the photo studio then got started on the 60's photoshoot right away.

Studio Lighting Exercise (not graded)
Period picture.
Identify a period picture within the years of 1940 to early 1960s. Choose a picture that you are able to reenact or recreate. Prepare and plan your outfit, make-up and hair for the shoot. Try to achieve the same or similar result as your reference. Edit your picture in photoshop and update the picture to your Facebook profile. Document the process in your reflection on your e-portfolio blog.
Prepare the file with white borders (as directed during the Editing exercise) and print an 8x10 print from Photomedia:

Studio Shots.

- For this week i was the model but i was also the photographer for Rahila and Ashley.

The main light was off because all we needed was spotlight direct to her face from a top angle. We use a blocker to create the dark shadows at the back then took the shot with ISO: 200, f/5.6, 1/60

We use the main light to highlight the left side of her face then the spotlight was to illuminate the background then the shot was taken with ISO: 100, f/5.6, 1/40

Arieff was the photographer for me.

-I was trying to remake the pose of late P.Ramlee with he was at a young age.

It took a while for arieff and yong to take the picture because they were having problem creating the shadow behind my shoulder but they got it eventually. Just the main light and few reflector was use to take the picture. No spotlight was needed. The shot was then taken with ISO: 100, f/5.6, 1/10

Experience:

This week i experience another week in the photo studio. Now that this was our second time i was abit more comfortable using the lights. i knew which function how. So it was easier to set up the lighting for other people because i could more or less understand how the light works. During the final theme based project i experience in a whole new way. i tryed not to take so much of action shots but i focus more on the crowd and faces on the bystander. As for the experience i got when i when to the printing shop was kinda of a creepy place but the experience of trying to print my pictures at a different place. I hoping the result will turn up nice.

Observation:

This week i observe that my knowledge on lighting has improve and i can read the lighting in a picture better now. I also observe that we have to be patient when your doing a studio photoshoot and you cant rush doing it. During the Final project i observe that i didnt focus much on the action going on i was observing more to the people around like the subs and coaches around.  During the visit to the printing shop i observe that the people there are really nice and helpful. They knew it was my first time there so she showed examples and samples of all the different type of papers and the quality.

Findings:

I find out that the lights are really sensitive and a slight move of the light can change the whole final picture. during the final project progression i find out that i could get my normal candid shots again because the people around still think that i would take pictures of just the players but i since i change my POV to the people around they didnt realise when i was taking their photographs. From the visit to Photomedia i find that the price for each print in quiet costly compared to the place i normally go and print. So i hope that the quality of the print will be as high as the price.

The real Week 13

7th November 2014 (Week 13)
Amer Eizwann (0320242)
Introduction to Photography
Studio Lighting.

Lecture: Today's class started with Mr Vinod roughly showing us what the lighting system in studio works. He showed that each lights has it own name and it's own purpose. Not all lights have to be use when you are doing a photoshoot. only use the lights that helps enhances your subject to make it look better. There 4 types of lights which is the main light, fill light, rim light and hair light. Mr Vinod clearly mention that we should not get confuse between type of light and type of lightings. There are several type of lighting which the names are subjective examples: Remberent Light, Butterfly light, Loop Lighting, Slip face lighting and etc. These lighting will cause shadows on your subject and depending where the light source comes from it determines the volume of a subject. There are few ways of doing lighting. You could use a Flashlight, Flashgun, Spotlight or just as simple as a window light. After all the explanation Mr Vinod took us to the photo studio to clean the place up than start doing a photoshoot of the picture that we have chosen.

STUDIO SHOTS

- Our task was to re-create the type of lighting in the picture that we have chosen using a main light, a spotlight that acts as a the hair light, background light and everything else.

I was the photographer for Arieff and Samantha.

Arieff picked James Dean as his model reference. We put the main light toward the right side of the model then the spotlight was put in the background. We use a reflector to lighten up the shadows on his face then the shot was taken with ISO 200, f/5.6 and shutter 1/10

Sam chose a Chinese model as her reference. It took awhile for us to position her accurately then we put the main light behind the camera to lit her face up well. Then the spotlight was use as a hair light to added the highlights on her hair. The photo was then taken with ISO 200, f/5.6 and shutter 1/25.

- I could not screen shot the amount of like they got in Facebook because they didnt chance their profile picture.

Reflections:

Experience:
From this week task, i experience that taking pictures in the studio is really fun but really tiring as well. I experience that you cant do studio shooting on your own or with 1 or 2 extra people. You would need a whole crew to help out to make a photoshoot success. During the final theme based project shooting i experience that im familiar to the environment so it was quick for me to adjust my settings but the bad thing was i was running out of ideas to shoot. I really hope by next week i would have my 5 amazing theme based pictures for final submission.

Observation:
This week, I observe that its not easy to copy back the lighting in the studio. Not everyone can pull of a studio portrait due to facial structure. There's alot of element to consider when doing a studio shooting. Make up and hair is very important because it effects the lighting and shadows of the picture. During the theme based project progression i observe that people now know that i invite them to play futsal because i want to do a photoshoot if them so now they pretend and act when they know im about to snap a picture. Those are the type of feeling i dont want because i want them to feel natural so that the picture looks naturally great rather then it looks like it was planned.

Findings:
This week, I find out that every lights in the studio has its purpose and we should always use the lighting to improve our pictures and not just for the sake of using it. From the lecture today i find out things that ive always wanted to know so i was quite happy and i did study abit the links Mr Vinod gave so when he explain it furthermore in class i was not lost. I would understand the things he was saying. From my understanding, Main light is the light that must be first to set up and position. then followed by the fill light which is just to light up the dark shadow area. The rim light is to illuminate the make your model stand out more. The hair light is to basically add highlight to the hair and make it more glowy. The background light is just like its name. It is to shine on the background to add an effect to the photo.
